Second week of Heritage Festival inspires local stories

Released 28/04/2017

As the final week of the 2017 Canberra and Region Heritage Festival nears, there is still so much to see and do in the nation’s capital and surrounds. This weekend proves to be eventful with a number of open days, re-enactments, tours and anniversaries.

“If you’re interested in our local bushranger history why not head out to the Braidwood Showground on Saturday for a spectacular re-enactment of the capture of the Clarke brothers – a daring bushranger gang brought to justice in April 1867,” Festival Coordinator Linda Roberts said.

“The 150th anniversary of this historic event will allow audiences to question why young men became bushrangers and understand the challenges they faced.

“If you don’t feel like venturing too far from the city, visit the Hall School Museum this weekend as two special exhibitions are launched. The first will showcase local Aboriginal artifacts and the second will focus on the machinery used by early European settlers in the region.

“With so much history in our own backyard, the Lake Burley Griffin Heritage Walk is a great way to explore the fascinating history of Scrivener Dam, Government House and Yarralumla Nursery. The four kilometre walk on Sunday gives participants a different perspective on exploring heritage in Canberra.

“Visit the heritage listed Mt Franklin Visitor Shelter and ski field on Sunday. It was once the oldest club-built ski lodge on the mainland prior to its destruction in the 2003 fires. Join members of the Canberra Alpine Club as they share stories about the site and showcase a range of skiing memorabilia that were used in the 1930s.

“Journey back to the 1800s and experience what life was like on family farms at the inaugural Majura Valley Bush Festival on Sunday. With many attractions such as wood chopping and whip cracking displays, Cobb and Co coach rides and Aboriginal talks happening throughout the day there is something for the whole family,” Ms Roberts said.

The 2017 Canberra and Region Heritage Festival runs until Sunday 7 May. For more information and the view the program visit www.act.gov.au/heritagefestival.
