Innovative and sustainable solutions on show tomorrow

Released 31/08/2016

The latest technology to improve sustainability for businesses – and the householder – will be on display at the 6th annual (and FREE) Actsmart Business Sustainability Expo at the National Convention Centre tomorrow from 10 am to 6 pm.

“The Actsmart Expo will have displays of the latest products and services from over 45 businesses from across the region, showcasing how people can save money and help the environment at the same time,” said Ros Malouf, Senior Manager, Sustainability Programs.

“There will be information about everything from solar panels to battery storage and worm farms to sustainable flooring. We will also have electric and hydrogen-powered cars on show from Tesla and Hyundai as well as a range of tailored workshops throughout the day.

“The commercial sector in Canberra is one of the biggest energy consumers and it is vital they are on-board to assist us to meet our 100% renewable energy target by 2020 and carbon neutrality by 2050.

“The Actsmart programs provide a wide range of options for our local Canberra businesses to become more sustainable, reduce their water and energy use, and substantially decrease waste sent to landfill.

“The statistics from these programs are impressive with 45,000 staff across Canberra and Queanbeyan now recycling at work with more than 400,000 domestic recycling bins’ worth of waste diverted to recycling since 2009.

“The Actsmart programs also assist businesses to upgrade their appliances, providing average savings of around $2,500 off their energy bills each year.

“We have seen some businesses reduce their lighting bill by up to 80% under this program. At the Expo we will also be launching a new web-based program to allow ACT businesses to estimate savings associated with upgrading their inefficient lighting to LED technology.

“Many businesses don’t know what inefficient and efficient lighting looks like and the new Actsmart lighting efficiency web tool will make it easy for the user to identify and cost a range of lighting upgrade options,” Ms Malouf said.

Ms Malouf said while the event is particularly targeted at businesses, there will also be information available for the householder on the many Actsmart programs they can utilise.

This year’s event is being undertaken as a partnership with the Canberra Business Chamber who is committed to providing its stakeholders with initiatives helping them to become more sustainable, while reducing overhead costs.
