Building better Community Connections through the Canberra City Gateway

Released 26/02/2016

The Canberra community is invited to have a say on a new strategy to transform Canberra’s main gateway along Northbourne Avenue into a fitting entrance for the national capital, Director-General of the Environment and Planning Directorate, Dorte Ekelund announced today.

The City and Gateway Urban Renewal Strategy will transform Northbourne Avenue into a gateway worthy of its status-lined with trees, beautiful landscaping and a series of distinct ‘urban villages’, with impressive buildings and flourishing cosmopolitan life.

The urban renewal strategy will also stitch together nearby existing communities by improving pedestrian and transport links, particularly east and west, and creating better environments for walking and cycling. Upgraded footpaths, more street trees, new street furniture and lighting are planned to improve the accessibility and look and feel of the area.

“We are seeking input on how we can improve walking and cycle paths, lighting, seating, landscaping and streetscapes to make the area safer and more accessible for the community,” Ms Ekelund said.

“Together, we can work towards enhancing our bush capital and creating a gateway to the city that is more welcoming to visitors and more pleasant, overall for the community”.

The community is invited to have a say at Meet the Planners Session at the O’Connor shops on Friday 26 February between 2-5pm or Saturday 27 February, outside the Ainslie shops between 10am-1pm.
