Lead government agency marks National Reconciliation Week

Released 31/05/2017

The Chief Minister, Treasury and Economic Development Directorate (CMTEDD) of the ACT Government has launched its Reconciliation Action Plan this National Reconciliation Week at theNational Arboretum Canberra.

CMTEDD’s Innovation Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) sets the vision and maps the path the directorate will take to position itself as an employer of choice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and given the reach of the directorate, will guide its potential to make a significant difference for the broader ACT community.

To support the launch of the RAP, a group of Ngunnawal Elders have created a possum skin cloak, reviving an ancient tradition that has not been practiced in around 200 years.

“The opportunity to work with a group of Ngunnawal Elders was a rare and wonderful chance to create a meaningful act of reconciliation in our workplace,” said Ian Hill, Executive Director of Enterprise Canberra and Executive Sponsor of the RAP.

“Making the cloak—learning old practices and enabling that knowledge to be passed on to future generations—is symbolic of the actions we’ll take as a directorate under this RAP.”

It was Ngunnawal Elder and CMTEDD staff member, Tina Brown, who indicated her community’s desire to create a possum skin cloak, complete with stories of clan and country painted onto the possum pelts.

The possum skin cloak artwork features throughout the design of the CMTEDD RAP document.

National Reconciliation Week runs from 27 May to 3 June. More information is available from www.reconciliation.org.au
