New student accommodation to boost ACT’s tourism offering

Released 25/07/2017

A new accommodation site next to EPIC, which officially opened today, has been designed to cater for school groups that visit the ACT throughout the year.

The National Capital Educational Tourism Project reported in 2014 that student educational tourism delivers about $105 million to the ACT economy. With better, purpose designed accommodation options available to school groups, the ACT Government hopes to grow this part of our tourism offering.

More than 400 students, 70 teachers and their drivers can all be accommodated in Canberra Park.  The facility is already receiving strong interest from the student market and is now exploring the opportunities in cycle-tourism with a focus on mountain biking.

The site is owned by the ACT Government (through EPIC) and leased to FreeSpirit. Thanks to this new facility Exhibition Park will now be able to play a key role in growing the ACT’s overnight visitor expenditure to $2.5 billion by 2020.
