Diverse and experienced boards to lead the renewal of Canberra’s CBD and delivery of affordable housing

Released 25/07/2017

A number of highly experienced and talented individuals will lead the renewal of Canberra’s city centre and deliver affordable housing options in our suburbs as the City Renewal Authority and the Suburban land Agency Board members.

The City Renewal Authority will give Canberrans a vibrant city centre through design-led, people-focussed urban renewal that promotes social and environmental sustainability.

It will give Canberra buildings that win awards, in areas Canberrans and visitors love to go. We don’t want to see bland boxes at the gateway to our city. We want interesting buildings and welcoming places that reflect the city we love. It will be the new authority’s job to deliver these so Canberra can compete with cities nationally and internationally for awards in architecture, design, sustainability and liveability.

The Suburban Land Agency will focus on new greenfield residential estates and more affordable housing. The new agency will deliver land release, affordable housing, better suburbs and focus on urban renewal projects in town centres and suburbs.

I’m pleased that we have been able to attract talented and diverse boards for the City Renewal Authority and the Suburban Land Agency.

Our national selection process ensured that we were able to appoint individuals that have experience working in similar urban renewal authorities such as the Barangaroo Delivery Authority.

The City Renewal Authority Board also includes members with experience in urban design and architecture, town planning, community engagement and experience in the private sector. The Suburban Land Agency Board includes members with experience in Australian and international land development, major infrastructure construction and civil works and experience in not-for-profit housing.

The Board Appointees are as follows:

City Renewal Authority

  • Dr Michael Easson AM – Chair
  • Christine Covington – Deputy Chair
  • Kate Brennan
  • Nigel Chamier
  • Ken Maher
  • Gabrielle Trainor

Suburban Land Agency

  • John Fitzgerald – Chair
  • Suzanne Jones – Deputy Chair
  • Angus Dawson
  • Peter Howman
  • Julie Garland McLellan

A seventh member of the City Renewal Authority Board will also be appointed from the National Capital Authority Board following an agreement between the ACT Government and the Federal Government. This appointment will ensure greater collaboration between the National Capital Authority and the City Renewal Authority.
