ACT Seniors Week to celebrate contribution of older Canberrans

Released 25/07/2017

Today the Minister for Veterans and Seniors Gordon Ramsay and I joined community and health sector leaders representing ACT Seniors at the official launch of ACT Seniors Week 2017.

ACT Seniors Week will be celebrated from 18 to 26 March with an impressive program coordinated by the Council on the Ageing (COTA) ACT to acknowledge and highlight the importance our senior citizens have as family members, friends, colleagues and their invaluable role in the Canberra community.

The ACT Government continues to support ACT Seniors Week by providing funding to COTA ACT for its calendar of events. This includes the Seniors Week Expo at EPIC, the Chief Minister’s Concert and the Positive Ageing Award.

Seniors card holders will also be able to travel for free on public transport during ACT Seniors Week 2017 (18 March - 26 March).

Minister for Veterans and Seniors Gordon Ramsay highlighted the ACT Government’s commitment to the safety and wellbeing of seniors.

“At the end of last financial year, people in the ACT aged 65 and over increased by 4.2 per cent – the second-highest rate of growth for that group in the country – and comprised 12.5 per cent of the overall ACT population,” Minister Ramsay said.

“I encourage all Canberrans to enjoy Seniors Week and to take this opportunity to recognise and celebrate the contribution of older people in our community.”

ACT Seniors Week runs until 26 March. For a full program of events visit cotaact.org.au/seniors-week-2017/2017
