Smart parking trial begins in Manuka

Released 25/07/2017

A trial of smart parking technology to make parking in the busy retail precinct of Manuka easier was formally launched today.

The 12 month trial is designed to help ease traffic congestion and travel time by using real-time technology to help Canberrans drive directly to the nearest parking space. This will support residents, local businesses and interstate visitors to move in and out of Manuka more easily, whether they are seeking on-street, off-street, free, paid, long-term or short-term parking.

The ACT Government is looking to improve parking in the ACT as part of our commitment to making Canberra a leading digital city.

As our city grows, demand for parking in our busy town centres will continue to increase. Smart parking seeks to address this issue, and will enhance our city centres by making it easier for drivers to travel around our city.

The trial utilises embedded infrared sensors and CBRfree WiFi to communicate information to a Smartphone application, as well as five new LED signs to guide patrons to available parking spaces. The ParkCBR app is now available for download for Apple and Android users.

The app allows Canberrans to view the availability of parking in Manuka before they leave, or for passengers to guide the driver to a parking space in the precinct. More information on the smart parking trial is available at www.act.gov.au/smartparking.
