Canberra’s Australia Day ambassador revealed

Released 25/07/2017

The countdown to Australia Day in Canberra has begun with the announcement of our 2016 ACT Australia Day Ambassador.

Australia Day is a time for all Australians to come together and celebrate what it means to live in this great country. As the nation’s capital, Canberra plays a special role in the nation’s celebrations with a number of important events taken place throughout the day.

This year’s ACT Australia Day Ambassador will be Brumbies and Wallabies champion David Pocock. Not only is he an outstanding sportsman for both club and country, but he is also as an inspiring social equity advocate and conservationist. I’m confident David’s profile in the community will help promote the activities taking place on Canberra on Australia Day as he will join the crowds in Commonwealth Park.

Celebrations will begin on Australia Day eve with the Australian of the Year awards followed by the popular ‘Australia Celebrates’ concert, which will feature a fantastic line-up of home-grown talent including Jimmy Barnes, Samantha Jade, Nathaniel and Cyrus.
On Australia Day itself, Commonwealth Park will play host to the traditional Great Aussie Day Breakfast presented by ActewAGL, as well as the annual Flag Raising Ceremony, the Citizenship Ceremony and free children’s entertainment including Jim Henson’s Dinosaur Train live stage show.

As the sun sets on Australia Day 2016, I encourage you to make your way to Regatta Point or the National Library of Australia lawns and enjoy the Australia Day Fireworks Spectacular.
