This page provides links to resources developed and shared as a result of ACT Chief Minister, Treasury and Economic Development Directorate (Directorate) events and initiatives. They are provided here for the information of and use by registered training organisations and other vocational education and training (VET) stakeholders.

1. Better Linkages between Employment and Training Initiative 

The purpose of this initiative was to fund RTOs and Employment Service Providers (ESPs) to work together on a project to develop and pilot innovative strategies, tools and/or resources designed to both 

  • to improve communication and collaboration between RTOs, ESPs other support organisations and employers
    and 
  • to better engage job seekers from the following target groups into training and employment:
    • People with a disability 
    • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples
    • Mature Aged Workers (40+) 
    • Youth at Risk (15-24) 
    • Long-term unemployed 

and for these outcomes to be shared locally and nationally.

The strategy included an aptitude assessment, customised work readiness preparation and foundation skills and employer mentoring leading to supervised work experience placements

Professional Development Workshops for RTOs

1. How to support learners’ foundation skill development in your VET Classroom

Workshop presenter:

Jana Scomazzon

Over the 14 years that Jana Scomazzon has been developing and facilitating foundation skills workshops, participants have spoken of her deep knowledge of foundation skills, the clarity with which she shares that knowledge, and her engaging presentation style. A former adult literacy practitioner, Jana is a recognised expert in LLN, foundation skills, Training Packages and the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) in the VET context.

2. Supporting students with numeracy learning needs in the VET classroom

Workshop presenter:

David Tout

Dave is an experienced numeracy educator who is particularly interested in making mathematics relevant, interesting and fun for all students especially those students who are disengaged from mathematics. Dave was one of the authors of the Australian Cores Skills Framework (ACSF), has written the numeracy units of the Certificate in General Education for Adults (CGEA), and since 1998 has been involved in international numeracy assessments including Adult Literacy and Lifeskills Survey (ALLS), Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) survey and the program for International Student Assessment (PISA) survey.

3. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness training

Caroline Hughes

Caroline Hughes was appointed Director of CIT Yurauna Centre – Indigenous Centre of Educational Excellence at Canberra Institute of Technology in January 2002. Caroline is a proud Ngunnawal Female Elder and traditional custodian of the ACT and Region. 

Lynnice Keen

Lynnice Keen is a Ngunnawal/Wiradjuri and Kamilaroi woman, the mother of two children, aged 16 and 12. Lynnice has worked in the ACT Government for 10 years in Training and Adult Education, Community Services Directorate and Justice and Community Safety Directorate. She now works fulltime at the CIT Yuruana Centre. 

Roxanne Brown

Roxanne Brown is a Murrawri woman of Brewarrina NSW and grew up in Cunnamulla QLD. She is the mother of five children all of which were born in Canberra/Queanbeyan. She came to Canberra at the age of 17 to commence nurses training at Canberra Hospital. The majority of her career has been as a nurse working in all areas of community health including hospitals. More recently she took the opportunity to teach at the CIT Yuruana Centre.

4. Supporting students with English as a second or other language in the VET classroom

Workshop presenter: 

Genevieve Haskett

Genevieve Haskett was the Director of Educational Programs and Services at TAFE SA from 2004 to 2013 where she initiated national workforce development projects in the area of foundation skills. Genevieve holds a Masters in Education (TESOL) and management qualifications, has worked and managed training across multiple industry sectors and is a specialist in English language, literacy and numeracy skills development for adults.

Independent Industry Validation of RTO Assessment Practices Pilot Program (IIVA)

The aim of the ACT Independent Industry Validation of RTO Assessment Practices (IIVA) pilot project was to identify best practice models of conducting IIVA by registered training organisations (RTOs) and identify the strengths and weaknesses in different approaches to: 

  • engage external stakeholders in the assessment practices* develop sustainable relationships between RTOs and industry 
  • develop a better understanding of industry expectations for assessment
  • investigate practical, online and written assessment practices that meet industry standards 
  • develop validation templates for validation purposes
  • investigate and trialling methods to distribute information efficiently and securely
  • evaluate procedures for gathering evidence for assessment, to improve assessment practices as well as RTOs using outcomes for continuous improvement practices
  • develop templates for validation that could be used for skills recognition and workplace assessments
  • develop validation terminology guidance for industry
