Accreditation and Registration
Accreditation and registration of tertiary education providers in the ACT and their courses is now the responsibility of national regulators, Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) and Tertiary Education Quality Standards Agency (TEQSA).
Australian Skills Quality Authority
The Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) is the national regulator for Australia's vocational education and training (VET) sector.
ASQA's functions include:
- registering providers of VET as 'registered training organisations' (RTOs)
- recommending to the Department of Education and Training that RTOs be registered on CRICOS to enrol overseas students
- accrediting VET courses
- conducting compliance audits and undertaking risk assessments of RTOs.
To register or manage your registration with ASQA, please visit the Asquanet website.
Standards for Registered Training Organisations
The Standards for National VET Regulator (NVR) Registered Training Organisations replace the former Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF) Standards for Registered Training Organisations. The Standards for NVR Registered Training Organisations are now the national standards against which applicants/RTOs are assessed to ensure consistent, high-quality training and assessment services in the VET system.
Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency
The Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) is the national regulator for the higher education sector incorporating the quality assurance functions that were previously the responsibility of the Australian Universities Quality Agency (AUQA).
TEQSA is established as an independent body with powers to regulate all higher education providers, monitor quality and set standards. Its primary task will be to ensure that students receive a high quality education at any of Australia's higher education providers.
For further information and updates please visit the TEQSA website.
Courses of Study in Schools under CRICOS
Education providers including schools seeking to provide a course(s) of study to overseas students must be listed in CRICOS maintained by the Commonwealth Government under the Education Services for Overseas Students Act 2000 (ESOS Act).
ACT providers of school education seeking to be registered on CRICOS must make an application to Skills Canberra which will be assessed against the requirements of the National Code of Practice for Registration Authorities and Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students 2007.
