Free Professional Development Workshop: supporting students with English as a second or other language in the VET classroom

The ACT Education and Training Directorate (the Directorate) is hosting a professional development workshop on Thursday 22 October 2015 for staff from RTOs delivering in the ACT.  This workshop will focus on supporting students with English as a second or other language (ESL) in the VET classroom.

About the Workshop

Topics covered will include:

  • Identification of the needs of adult ESL students
  • The Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) and language assessment tools
  • A two-way approach to understanding language competencies in vocational units
  • Strategies to support ESL learners.

About the Presenter: Genevieve Haskett

Genevieve Haskett was the Director of Educational Programs and Services at TAFE SA from 2004 to 2013 where she initiated national workforce development projects in the area of foundation skills. These projects led to improved professional standards for vocational education teachers, to better understanding of the needs of LLN learners and to the use of the ACSF. As a member of the National Access Education Leaders group from 2005 to 2013, she worked with the consortium to lobby for the development of the Foundation Skills Training Package (FSK). 

Genevieve holds a Masters in Education (TESOL) and management qualifications, has worked and managed training across multiple industry sectors and is a specialist in English language, literacy and numeracy skills development for adults. She has held accreditation in English language testing for the following assessment and diagnostic tools: International English Language Testing System (IELTS), International Second Language Proficiency Rating (ISLPR), Cambridge English Language Testing and the ACSF. She has over 20 years experience as a teacher in ESL to adult migrants and international students. She has also designed programs to improve student engagement for disengaged, adult hard to reach learners and gained funding for community, state and national projects. Genevieve currently works across the vocational and higher education sectors as a teacher and educational consultant.
