Regulation of Boarding Style Accommodation Review

Regulation of Boarding Style Accommodation Review

Background

In July 2010 the ACT Government moved to close down a number of overcrowded suburban houses which had been operated as unlicensed boarding style accommodation. In response to these instances of substandard and potentially dangerous accommodation the ACT Government commenced a review of the legislation and regulation governing boarding style accommodation in the ACT. A discussion paper: Issues and Options for the Regulation of Boarding Style Accommodation in the ACT was published in the Community Notice Board section of The Canberra Times of 13 November 2010 to seek comments from the community, with consultation ending on 18 December 2010.

Engagement with the community

In total, eight written and one verbal submissions were received.  Issues raised in the submissions included the need for clarity and consistency of definitions, more effective regulation, and balancing the need for regulation with affordable housing.

A summary of the key points made in the submissions and the individual submissions are available on the Submissions page.

The ACT Government would like to thank all contributors for their time and effort.

Next Steps

The Chief Minister’s Department will reconvene the inter-departmental working group to develop a proposal for legislative change based on the issues identified in the submissions and in consultation with stakeholder groups.
