ACT Skills Future: Key Initiatives in a Long Term Strategy to Address the Skills Challenge [PDF PDF  665KB] (ACT Skills Future) was launched in May 2008 to provide a long term strategy to address the shortage of skilled workers in the ACT. This was supported by $51m over four years in the 2008-09 Budget.

The Strategy aims to address the shortage of skilled workers through four priority areas:

  • People and Workforce: address the need for people in the workforce in light of the demographic challenge (eg. ageing demographic and population size)
  • Productivity: increase the productivity of those already in the workforce;Participation: lift the participation of people currently outside of the workforce; and
  • Education and Training: ensure the education and training needs of today and tomorrow’s workforce are met.

ACT Skills Commission

In April 2008 the Skills Commission published its final report that made recommendations for consideration by the ACT Government and ACT community in addressing skills issues. The Report made recommendations for producing people with the skills needed by a growing and dynamic economy.

The ACT Government established the ACT Skills Commission in 2007 with the following terms of reference:

  • Provide high level, strategic advice to the Government on skills issues and the strategies required to meet the ACT’s skills needs now and into the future;
  • In developing its advice and strategies, consult with stakeholders including business, the community sector, employees, students, education providers and the broader ACT community; and
  • Advise on strategies to draw together the stakeholders so that enduring and systemic solutions are progressed to address skills issues.

As part of its activities the Skills Commission commissioned a report on ACT and Region Demographics and Trends. This looked out towards 2015 to consider:

  • Past and future demographic and labour force trends in the ACT and the region.
  • Past and future training trends in the ACT and the region.
  • Past and future child care trends in the ACT and the region.
  • An assessment of current 'gaps' between actual and potential ACT participation rates.
