Projected ACT Population

It is projected that the Territory will reach a population of 400,000 by 2018; and 500,000 by 2043.

Canberra is also expected to experience significant population ageing during this time with those aged 65 and over set to increase from 10.2 per cent of the population in 2009 to 21.9 per cent in 2059.

ACT Population Projection Assumptions

The official ACT population projections take into account Estimated Resident Population data, as released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), as well as the most recent assumptions on fertility, mortality and migration.

Life Expectancy at Birth Assumes life expectancy at birth will reach 86 years for males and 88 years for females over the projection period (linear improvement in life expectancy)
