Future Population

Population projections are available for:

Accurate population projections are fundamental to high quality planning and policy development. The projections do not represent targets, but instead assist us to better plan for the community’s future needs, including housing, schools, health care, aged care facilities, and other services you use every day.

Projections have been derived using a cohort-component model and applying a series of assumptions about the components of population change to determine future populations.

In contrast, estimates of the current population are prepared by the Australian Bureau of Statistics based on actual births and deaths data, Medicare enrolments and dwelling approvals. See here for the latest estimate of the current population of the ACT.

The ACT Government projections are updated periodically to reflect the changing demographic trends. The projections will next be updated in 2013-14.
