Baby Boomer Retirements and Our Future Workforce (December 2010)
Arising from discussions with business community leaders it has been recognised that there are concerns regarding the extent of existing skills shortages in the ACT, including suggestions that the ACT will face a ‘skills crisis’ in the next 5-10 years as baby boomers retire. The Canberra Times reports baby boomers make up some 47 per cent of the ACT population and nearly all baby boomers will retire over the next 10 years – and most will retire over the next five years. The report stated that this meant 150,000 Canberrans would be retiring.
Baby Boomer Retirements and Our Future Workforce provides an analysis based on data from the 2006 ABS Census of Population and Housing. Baby Boomers are taken to be people who were born between 1946 and 1964 (inclusive). The report examines the potential implications of Baby Boomer retirement against labour force projections.

Population Ageing in the ACT: Issues and Analysis (September 2010)
![]() |
Population Ageing in the ACT collates current information regarding the effects of ageing in the ACT and explores some of the policy issues arising from these changes, including an ANU analysis of the PATH through Life Survey. Although the ACT population is relatively young by national standards, like other jurisdictions across Australia, and many countries around the world, the ACT population is ageing. An ageing population will have a range of economic, social and fiscal implications for the ACT. However, it is important to recognise that although an ageing ACT population will provide a number of challenges in the years ahead, it will also present new opportunities for the Territory. |
