Roof replacements at Canberra schools

Released 25/06/2018

Six Canberra public schools will benefit from the $18 million roof replacement program funded in the 2018 Budget.

Roof replacements will occur over the next four years Alfred Deakin High School; Calwell High School (part re-roofing); Campbell High School; Dickson College (part re-roofing); North Ainslie Primary School; and Telopea Park School.

As school buildings age replacing roofs is a vital part of maintaining school safety and amenity. New roofs will make these buildings more comfortable for students and staff and improve energy efficiency through installing insulation or using new insulated roofing panels.

Renewal of deteriorating school roofs will also minimise the damage and disruption that can be caused by water leaks and storms.

The government will also explore expanded use of renewable energy technology at schools by ensuring that the new roofs have the capacity to accommodate additional rooftop solar systems. This could see the installation of additional photovoltaic panels that can be connected to on-site energy storage. Existing panels will also be removed and reinstalled.

The government is providing new schools while also expanding and upgrading established schools to maintain the ACT’s world class education system. For example, a recent $4m roof upgrade at Mt Stromlo High School in Weston Creek replaced aged roof tiles with insulated sheeting, along new gutters, downpipes and air conditioning units.

The 2018 budget included $1.3 billion for education to continue growing services for our growing city.
