Nominations now open for work on violence prevention

Released 27/08/2018

Nominations are now open for the 2018 Violence Prevention Awards. The annual awards recognise projects and activities, or individuals who are making significant contributions to the prevention of violence against women and children in the ACT.

This year the ACT Government are again hoping to promote examples of exemplary work being done in our community. It is important that nominations are received about innovative partnerships between individuals or organisations in the ACT so that the ACT Government can acknowledge their contribution towards creating a community where women and children can live free from fear and violence.

There are six categories of awards:

  • Private sector;
  • Sport;
  • Workplace;
  • Media;
  • Community/not for profit sector; and
  • Health and/or education.

Last year’s awards acknowledged a bunch of great contributors including the Fearless Comedy Gala which uses power of comedy to highlight the issue of intimate partner, domestic and family violence.

Amongst the recipients were also Assistance Beyond Crisis who developed, funded and organised a program to offer loans to people who have experienced violence in the community, and need help to stay safe, in housing or to help with other debt.

The 2017 Awards also recognised John Hinchey who served many years as the Victims of Crime Commissioner, and for his essential role in supporting key projects that worked across sectors, in the media, with victims of domestic and family violence, in the courts and in supporting the Domestic Violence prevention Council and the Family Violence Intervention Program in the ACT.

The ACT Government’s Safer Families package emphasises that domestic and family violence is everyone’s business, and will take a collaborative response across the whole community to ensure families are safer and better supported.

If you know of an individual, project or activity that is contributing to this change, I encourage you to nominate.

Nominations close on 15 October 2018. Go to https://dhcs.smartygrants.com.au/2018_VPA
