New labs let students experiment and inquire

Released 27/06/2018

The ACT Government has invested nearly $1 million to significantly upgrade science areas at Melba Copland Secondary School, Canberra High School, UC High School Kaleen and Mt Stromlo High School.

The project at Melba Copland Secondary School was a total refurbishment.

Old benches have been demolished and replaced with mobile student desks to provide a more flexible teaching and learning space. New joinery to the perimeter of the room provides student work points with gas, water and data connections. A new, accessible teacher’s demonstration bench has been installed with a new interactive flat panel presentation screen and whiteboards. The project also included upgrades to flooring, blinds, and sewerage systems.

These upgraded learning spaces at Melba Copeland Secondary School will improve student engagement in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

An estimated 75 per cent of the fastest growing occupations require young people to have skills in these areas. More importantly, as students develop skills in these areas they develop important capabilities required in modern workplaces and life. Students learn to work collaboratively, think creatively and critically, analyze and solve problems, and to do so using digital technology.

The government’s Public Schools Infrastructure Upgrade Program is seeing classrooms renewed and extended, new learning spaces added, toilets and change rooms refurbished, and garden and horticultural facilities improved.

The 2018 Budget included $1.3 billion for education to continue growing services for our growing city.
