NAPLAN review a mixed outcome

Released 22/06/2018

Education ministers have taken a first, albeit small step towards reviewing the effects and unintended consequences of Australia’s NAPLAN testing and reporting regime.

I’ve long held concerns about the reporting and culture around NAPLAN and the league tables enabled by My School – most of all the unfair impact they can have on teachers, students and school communities, particularly in lower income communities.

In recent months the voices urging change around this test have become louder and I’m glad that ministers have responded to this message.

I put forward a considered proposal, identifying the most important issues without compromising our collective responsibilities of transparency and accountability to the Australian community in the way school systems perform.

Although it’s not the broad review many of us had hoped for I’m glad education ministers have at least agreed to terms of reference on a way forward so that nationally Australia can examine the impact of reporting practices on students and schools.

The Education Council communique for its 22 June 2018 meeting, including the NAPLAN review terms of reference, are available online at http://www.educationcouncil.edu.au/EC-Communiques-and-Media-Releases.aspx.
