$2.4 million boost to Canberra’s sporting community

Released 28/02/2018

60 local sporting organisations have been provided with ACT Government grant funding to boost participation in sport, provide training and education opportunities and improve club facilities across Canberra.

We want Canberrans to live a healthy, active and inclusive lifestyle. It’s important everyone in the community has every chance to get involved in sport and active recreation and the 2018 Sport and Recreation Grants Program will again deliver these opportunities.

This year, as part of the program, the government has introduced the Women’s Sport and Recreation Participation and Leadership Program, an important 2016 election commitment.

This new initiative provides financial assistance to support participation, education and training activities for women and girls involved in sport across the ACT.

Under the program, the Tuggeranong Netball Association has been given $10,000 to attract women of other cultures, in particular the Muslim and refugee communities.

Another successful applicant is Capital Football which has been awarded $4,700 to upskill female referees for the 2018 Kanga Cup. Providing education and training to support female match officials benefits the event, while also creating a legacy through local officiating.

The ACT Government is proud to keep supporting Australia’s most active city and supporting the wonderful community clubs, local facilities, open spaces and countless volunteers who make up the sporting community.

Other organisations receiving funding this year include:

  • Athletics ACT to purchase of Pole Vault landing bags, cover and base for use at the Woden Park Athletics Facility ($20,886)
  • Canberra BMX Club to upgrade the track’s lighting system at Melba to improve rider safety ($20,886)
  • Capital Lakes Rowing Club to purchase a number of sculls for light weight female rowers ($26,000)
  • ACT Tenpin Bowling Club to implement a junior program targeted at inactive children ($20,000)
