Students inspired to be bold for change

Released 25/07/2017

Today Gungahlin College has hosted an International Women’s Day Youth Forum with a panel of influential experts from our community.

It was great to chat with students about issues that impact them, their family, friends and community.

International Women’s Day traditionally draws women together in unity to commemorate past achievements and highlight current social, economic and political issues.

This year’s theme: ‘Be Bold for Change’ focuses on encouraging individuals in our community to become leaders within their own spheres of influence by taking action to accelerate gender equality and opportunities for women.

The ACT Government is committed to removing barriers so women can continue to reach their potential, contribute to innovation and take up leadership positions.

Recently, a new Women’s Advisory Council was appointed to assist us with this work. The members of the Council will provide their expert advice to help further our efforts to enhance gender equality and opportunities for women and girls.

I would like to thank the panel members who participated in today’s forum for their valuable contribution:

  • Ms Bettina Malone: US Embassy Canberra
  • Ms Sarah Mason: Chief Executive Officer of the ACT Writers Centre
  • Dr Will Grant: Australian National University
  • Amne Alrifai: Director, Unveiled Thought
  • Natalie Howson: Director-General of the Education Directorate
