Newly refurbished kitchen for Alfred Deakin High School

Released 06/09/2017

Today I visited Alfred Deakin High School to open their newly refurbished kitchen. This $296,000 project demonstrates the Government’s commitment to modernising our public schools with an open and contemporary hospitality space.

The upgrade allows students to cook and prepare food in a great space with new cooking equipment, and the kitchen layout provides a flexible learning space for both theory and practical work.

It was great to see both the teachers and students excited to show off their new kitchen facilities today as they shared a number of tasty platters of food they had cooked up.

The new kitchen features a video system and a large wall mounted monitor so that teachers can easily demonstrate skills to the students. There is a stainless steel hospitality workstation with a coffee machine and seven student cooking stations including one accessible station that is height adjustable.

The space encourages an authentic learning experience and promotes healthy lifestyle, with classes focusing on fresh home-style cooking. External doors have also been included in the upgrade, with plans to eventually add an outdoor café where students will serve healthy and creative dishes further promoting wellbeing across the community.

Through the current ACT wide discussion on the future of education, students have expressed a desire to learn real life skills. These new facilities at Alfred Deakin High School ensure students have a great local school equipped to provide them with skills they can use in both the hospitality industry and everyday life.

In this year’s budget the ACT Government funded its election commitment with $85 million for school upgrades across the territory which will go toward more upgrades such as the new kitchen at Alfred Deakin High School.

There is still time to contribute to the ACT Government’s discussion on the future of education in the ACT. To join the conversation go to www.yoursay.act.gov.au/futureofeducation.
