New outdoor courts for Canberra basketballers

Released 09/06/2017

The construction of outdoor courts has transformed previously vacant land beside the Belconnen Basketball Stadium into a community space for fun, training and competition.

The new outdoor basketball facility has the only FIBA (International Basketball Federation) 3x3 accredited courts in Australia, due to the international standard Power Game surface.

The project has been fully funded by an ACT Government grant to Basketball ACT.The courts have adjustable hoops and can be used for junior programs, wheelchair basketball, a shoot around with friends, social competitions or skills training.

3x3 is an emerging form of the sport with a shorter, less structured game, which could see a whole new crowd participate in basketball for fun and fitness.

The construction of the courts is a real game-changer for Basketball ACT but also for this area of Belconnen, which will come alive with the sounds of basketball trainings, competitions and events, especially in the warmer months.

I congratulate Basketball ACT on their foresight with the planning and development of this complex, looking beyond the traditional 5 on 5 indoor seasons to create the kind of sporting opportunities Canberrans are looking for.

The ACT Government is committed to supporting safe, functional, accessible facilities like these new outdoor basketball courts to enable Canberrans to stay healthy, active and well.
