The ACT Government has committed to tacking domestic and family violence as a key priority and has today announced the commencement of a new grants program which will support women and children leaving violence.
The Safer Families Grants Program was an initiative announced as part of the2016-17 ACT Government budget’s landmark Safer Families package, which is investing $21.42 million in driving the next phase of reform in whole-of-government, community-backed responses to violence against women and children.
A total of $315,000 in funding over the next four years has been dedicated to assist people with their immediate needs through practical financial assistance to establish a private rental tenancy and avoid homelessness after fleeing violence.
A grant of up to $2,000 will be provided to eligible Housing ACT Rental Bonds Loan Scheme applicants affected by domestic and family violence. This grant is designed to assist with the costs of moving, buying furniture and white goods, setting up utilities and services and paying advance rent. Applicants will also receive fast-tracked access to an interest-free loan of up to 90% of their rental bond under the existing Housing ACT Rental Bonds Loan Scheme.
The ACT Government will pilot this program in partnership with the Domestic Violence Crisis Service and local businesses. The program will be evaluated after the first 12 months to ensure its effectiveness. Pending the success of the program, the Government will explore opportunities to partner with additional service providers.
