Minister’s Student Congress considers the future of ACT education

Released 25/07/2017

The Minister’s Student Congress met today for the first time for 2017, with the focus of this year’s discussion on the future of education in the ACT.

The Congress is a great group of children and young people who really are the future of Canberra. The insights and ideas they provide are inspiring.

As such, the Congress will help lead the conversation about the future of education in the ACT. This important focus stems from our election commitment to develop a strategy for the future of education to make sure that every child, regardless of their circumstances or background, has access to an education that will set them up for a bright future.

Students are at the centre of our schools, so to understand what works well, what doesn’t and what opportunities there are for the future, their voice needs to be included in this conversation. I am confident that this strong representative body will work together with their peers in primary, high school and colleges to provide a strong student voice in this discussion.

The Congress has already started work and today unveiled the hashtag #educationforthenextgeneration which will help bring the digital conversation on the future of education together.

We know every child’s needs are different and the answer for one child is not the solution for another, so it important to engage directly with our students.

I am excited to hear the outcomes of today’s initial discussion and have also encouraged our students to go back to their schools and colleges and engage more widely with their peers in this important discussion.

We want to hear from students, parents, school communities and the wider community to help shape the best possible education system for all of our students. To contribute to the conversation go to www.education.act.gov.au.
