A 14-unit Lyneham development is one of almost 200 new dwellings to be handed over to Housing ACT early this year, marking a major milestone for the $550 million public housing renewal program.
The newly-completed one-bedroom units in Goodwin Street are walking distance to public transport along Northbourne Avenueand feature spacious courtyards and balconies, reverse-cycle cooling and heating and secure basement car parking and storage enclosures. They have a high (6.5) energy efficiency rating, sound-proofing between units and are set in low-maintenance landscaped gardens.
The renewal program is replacing outdated concentrations of public housing with smaller-scale, efficient and accessible accommodation scattered throughout Canberra. Other new public housing developments that will soon be ready for tenants are on several sites in Coombs (125 two-bedroom units), Moncrieff (more than 50 two and three-bedroom homes) and Denman Prospect (12 three-bedroom units).
A number of the new tenants who will relocate from older public housing in Braddon, were keen to stay in the inner city because of their attachment to the area, and their local community, and a number will relocate to other suburbs. .
The development was purchased from a private owner, local builder Banyan Constructions as part of the public housing renewal taskforce. This program allows those with a house or unit for sale to submit proposals to the Taskforce, and if successful will benefit from flexible settlement and savings on marketing and sales costs. The invitation for proposals is open until September next year, or until the Taskforce reaches its target. To date the Taskforce has successfully purchased 118 dwellings through this process and contracts are being prepared for the purchase of more than 200 other dwellings.
The renewal program is on track to meet the Government’s target of providing 1,288 new public housing dwellings by 2019. A total of 235 dwellings (including constructed and purchased homes) have now been completed and transferred to Housing ACT, with another 288 under construction. In addition, the Taskforce is continuing to plan for hundreds of other dwellings on sites across the city.
