Health Promotion Innovation grants to create a healthier Canberra

Released 25/07/2017

Six local Canberra organisations will receive grants through the Health Promotion Innovation Fund to implement innovative health projects in the ACT this year.

The Health Promotion Innovation Fund provides single-year grants of up to $15,000 to fund innovative projects that aim to reduce overweight and obesity, reduce smoking and alcohol-related harm, and support healthy ageing in the ACT population.

I am pleased to announce that the following organisations have received Health Promotion Innovation Fund grants: Arthritis ACT, Capital Region Muscular Dystrophy, CIT Student Association, Monash Primary School, Nutrition Australia ACT, and the Tuggeranong Child and Family Centre.

Funding for Arthritis ACT and Capital Region Muscular Dystrophy will enable projects that encourage and support their clients to participate in a range of physical activities that are tailored to their specific health needs.

Nutrition Australia ACT received two grants, which will see them work with Libraries ACT to deliver healthy eating messages and hands-on food preparation skills to young children and their parents and carers. Nutrition Australia ACT will also provide adults in trades based industries with the knowledge and skills to make healthier food and drink choices.

The CIT Student Association’s project will build the nutritional literacy of ACT apprentices to support them to make healthier food and drink choices.

With their funding, Monash Primary School will implement a range of activities focused on growing and cooking food to continue to build on the healthy food and drink environment that has been created at the school.

Tuggeranong Child and Family Centre will use their grant to work in partnership with Narrabundah Early Childhood School to deliver a nutrition education program to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families at the school.

The ACT Government is committed to investing in programs that aim to reduce overweight and obesity and support active living, and these grants will go a long way to supporting projects that work directly with our community to improve the health and create change amongst Canberrans of all ages.
