Half-a-million books read during 2017 Chief Minister’s Reading Challenge

Released 22/11/2017

Today I congratulated the ACT schools and students who participated in the 2017 Chief Minister’s Reading Challenge, on behalf of the Chief Minister.

Thousands of ACT students rose to the Challenge this year, collectively reading an estimated half a million books over six months. The Challenge invites students from preschool to year 8 to read at least 15 books between February and September each year.

This is the thirteenth year of the Reading Challenge and each year I continue to be impressed by ACT students’ enthusiasm and growing participation. There was an increase of more than 3,000 students in 2017, with over 34,000 students registering for the Challenge.

I love hearing success stories about participating students and ways schools promote the Challenge, including book clubs, book swaps, author visits, student book reviews, and even students choosing to read above and beyond the 15 books. The commitment and passion for reading across our schools is inspiring.

A special congratulations to the 26 schools who achieved 100% student completion across their entire school, including one community languages school, two early childhood schools, and 23 primary schools – you should be very proud of your achievement.

Book vouchers totaling over $11,000 have been provided by sponsors of the Challenge, Paperchain Bookstore. Their continued generosity will enable winning schools to purchase new books to add to their libraries for students to enjoy.

The Reading Challenge is a very successful literacy initiative that promotes a lifelong love of reading, and it’s wonderful to see new schools becoming involved each year. I encourage all students to continue reading at every opportunity and I hope even more schools accept the Challenge in 2018.
