Continued support for Chinese students in the ACT

Released 02/11/2017

I was deeply concerned about the assault of Chinese international secondary school students at the Woden bus interchange during the week of Monday 23 October. The ACT Government values the contribution that all international visitors make to our city, including our friends from China.

Over the past week ACT Government directorates have been working closely together to ensure that international students are supported through this time.

Last week, ACT Policing had arrested two juveniles who have been put before the ACT Children's Court. By way of a further update, I can confirm ACT Policing are continuing their investigations.

The Education Directorate has made counselling services and other supports available to all of the international students involved in the incident. Additionally, the Education Directorate and ACT Policing are holding briefings with the Chinese community, students, onshore homestay carers and parents.

The Education Directorate has contacted all families of Chinese students living in Australia and is keeping families up to date with measures being taken in Australia to ensure the safety of their children.

Police have increased patrols in and around bus interchanges in the ACT. The Education Directorate has met with international students at ACT public schools to reiterate our concern for their wellbeing and welfare, and discuss topics such as personal safety, the local justice system and the importance of contacting police if anyone feels they are in danger or witness anti-social or criminal behaviour.

The ACT Government has stayed in regular contact with members of local Chinese community, Chinese Embassy and other relevant federal departments to update on matters regarding the incident.

Canberra remains a safe place to live and study. The ACT Government values the contribution of international students to our community, and Canberrans overwhelmingly welcome international students and visitors.
