Capital Lakes Rowing Club gets new home at Grevillea Park

Released 25/07/2017

The new $1.4 million Grevillea Park Rowing Facility officially opened today will be the home for Capital Lakes Rowing Club, as well as providing storage space for the ACT Branch of the Broulee Surf Lifesaving Club and the water-based activities of Scouts ACT.

With Capital Lakes Rowing Club relocating from the Kingston Foreshore, the new rowing shed at Grevillea Park will allow the club to increase its membership and expand its para-rowing program (rowing for athletes with a disability).

The ACT Government has worked closely with the National Capital Authority (NCA), lake user groups, members of the community and local stakeholders on these upgraded facilities at Grevillea Park. As well as the rowing shed, the project increased car parking from 22 to 109 and developed a design that is sympathetic to the area and complements the lake environment.

This project dates back to 2010, when an ACT Government-commissioned review of recreational facilities around Lake Burley Griffin found that existing water-based recreational hubs were close to capacity, and increased demand by a growing population required additional sites for these activities.

In May 2014 a masterplan was prepared to develop Grevillea Park as a recreational hub. Community consultation ensured maximum access to the lake and a low-scale design sympathetic to the surrounds, and  the NCA approved the works in December 2015.

This architecturally designed building is a welcome addition to the many sport and recreation facilities located around Lake Burley Griffin.

Not only does it provide a home for Capital Lakes Rowing Club, it will also accommodate a number of smaller lake user groups, helping to address the increasing demand for suitable facilities around our beautiful lake.
