Canberra welcomes Australia and France for the Rugby League World Cup

Released 01/11/2017

Today I officially welcomed the Australian and French national teams to the nation’s capital ahead of their Rugby League World Cup 2017 match at Canberra Stadium this Friday.

This will be the second of three Rugby League World Cup 2017 matches to be played in Canberra and is recognised as a critical game for both teams for their continuation in the tournament.

The French team recently played a thrilling game against Lebanon at Canberra Stadium in their opening match, and after taking on the Australian Kangaroos they will then travel to Perth to play England. Following their highly anticipated clash in Canberra, the Australian team next travels to Sydney where they will meet Lebanon.

I would like to wish both teams all the best for their match here on Friday night and for the remainder of the tournament. I also encourage visiting players, officials, media and spectators to take some time while in Canberra to explore the diverse sights and experiences our beautiful city has to offer.

The Rugby League World Cup 2017 is being staged across 13 host cities in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. As the largest sporting event of 2017, it sees 20 teams competing in 41 matches over 5 weeks – culminating in the final to be played in Brisbane on 2 December.

Canberra is proud to be a Host City for the Rugby League World Cup 2017 and our participation in this international sporting tournament reinforces our reputation as a world-class events and tourism destination.

Following the fixture between Australia and France this Friday, we then look forward to welcoming Fiji and Italy for Canberra’s final match of the tournament on Friday 10 November.

I strongly encourage Canberrans to take the opportunity to be part of the Rugby League World Cup 2017 – pick a team, show your support and get swept up in the excitement and atmosphere at Canberra Stadium.
