Canberra to host Fed Cup tennis in 2018

Released 05/12/2017

Canberra will be on show to the world this summer as we host a tie in the 2018 Fed Cup – the premier team competition in women’s tennis, which will see Australia take on Ukraine.

The Fed Cup adds to Canberra’s international standing as a hot-spot for tourism having been named on Lonely Planet’s list of the world’s top 10 cities to visit in 2018.

Between 10-11 February next year some of the world’s biggest tennis stars, including Australia’s No.1 player Ashleigh Barty, Daria Gavrilova, Casey Dellacqua and Grand Slam champ Sam Stosur, head to Canberra as part of Australia’s Fed Cup team. The Ukraine team will feature their top players too, led by world No.6 Elina Svitolina.

Having such wonderful female athletes in the city has the potential to inspire the next generation. For young girls, the value of such role models cannot be underestimated.

This exciting opportunity was made possible after the ACT Government committed $7.15m towards redevelopment of the Canberra Tennis Centre in Lyneham.

This great facility now includes a variety of surfaces, an indoor facility, central show court and broadcast lighting, benefiting the local community while also allowing us to host even more elite tennis events.

Canberra has a passionate tennis community and some of Australia’s most successful players have learned their craft here on our community courts, and as part of our local clubs.

The ACT Government’s partnership with Tennis ACT and Tennis Australia to invest in redeveloping the facilities at Lyneham has improved opportunities for coaching, junior programs and elite development.

An international event of this nature is a chance to showcase our city to the world and demonstrate our capacity to host significant elite events into the future. We look forward to embracing both teams in February and welcome fans from around Australia and the world to join us for this great event.
