Audit report shows Public Housing Renewal Program is delivering for those who need it

Released 25/07/2017

A new report from the ACT Auditor-General has confirmed the effectiveness of the Public Housing Renewal Program as it delivers great new homes for many public housing tenants.

The report has found the governance and administration of the program is sound and its management effective.

Importantly, it has also found that the relocation needs and preferences of housing tenants have been effectively recognised and managed by Housing ACT.

I particularly want to acknowledge the members of the Linking Into New Communities Taskforce (LINCT) who are doing great work in supporting tenants around their choices and moves into new homes.

The report’s three recommendations go to reporting and modelling under the program and the government will respond formally to each one.

The renewal program is on track to provide 1,288 new public housing dwellings by 2019.

A total of 489 (including constructed and purchased homes) have now been completed and transferred to Housing ACT with another 57 under construction.

There are a further 392 dwellings in the design pipeline and 350 undergoing a purchase process.

The Public Housing Renewal Taskforce is continuing to meet with community councils, resident groups and community members to work through their suggestions, concerns and questions about developments on some sites.

Housing ACT and the LINCT continue to engage with tenants around the relocation process. Of the 1,288 dwellings being replaced, 642 have now been vacated.
