ACT thriving in new Census data

Released 25/07/2017

More people than ever before are seeing Canberra as a great place to live, with the ACT the fastest growing jurisdiction in Australia.

The first release of data from the 2016 Census reveals the ACT is growing faster than every other state and territory, with population up 11.2% to 397,397 on Census night.

The 2016 Census data shows people are flocking to Canberra for high quality jobs, healthcare and education, and a high standard of living.

The ACT’s median household income is the highest in the nation at $998 per week, almost 150% of the Australia-wide median of $662 per week.

Our city’s population is growing because more people than ever are finding out what locals already know: Canberra is a great place to live.

We are a diverse community, with this Census showing a slight increase in our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population, while more than a quarter ACT residents were born overseas.

From celebrating multiculturalism to diversifying our economy and creating more and better jobs, our investments are paying off.

This government is making sure the city we love will be even better as it grows, by delivering better healthcare, betters schools and better infrastructure like roads and public transport to support our population into the future.

These headline figures can hide the tough realities lived by some in our community, which is why supporting fairness and inclusion is something the ACT Government and our community are committed to. Canberrans can be proud of the direction this city is headed as we focus on building a better place to live, work, study and invest.
