ACT Students Rewarded for Excellence in Sports

Released 25/07/2017

The School Sport ACT Excellence Awards were presented today, recognising students who have shown great athletic ability and sportsmanship at local, national and international levels.

The School Sport ACT Excellence Awards is an annual event celebrating the achievements of ACT students who have been nominated by their school or their nominated team official, coach or manager.

The ACT Government has long supported school sports and is providing $254,000 funding to School Sport ACT across three years. The organisation currently has a membership of 135 schools and supports approximately 60,000 students across the ACT to participate in sport.

It is exciting to see students today following in the footsteps of many well known ACT sports people achieving great things here in Canberra and all around the world.

This year, scholarship categories have been broadened to ensure more students can be acknowledged as well as a school on the whole, without necessarily having to be the team superstar. The new School Participation Award acknowledges the school with the highest number of student entries into School Sport ACT events in relation to the overall number of students at a school.

This award is not only celebrating the sporting success of these students, it is about teaching young people about fair play and having a go, all with the support and encouragement of their school.

Among the students who received an award today, 18 of this year’s acknowledged senior students have proudly gone on to represent Australia in their selected sport, making the All Australian team and some leading to an international tour.

Congratulations to the winners and your school communities today, especially considering the demands of school work on top of your commitment to sport.
