ACT Budget to deliver better teachers

Released 25/07/2017

The ACT government is ensuring that our children are prepared for the jobs of the future by investing in teaching scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) and languages.

We know that occupations in STEM-related careers are some of the fastest growing, with the greatest potential to provide work to the next generation.

We also know that a good teacher will have a life-long impact on their students. Keeping our teachers up to date in the teaching of STEM, and in turn making sure our students become engaged in these subjects in their early years, is vital to setting students up for better learning throughout their time at school.

The 2017-18 Budget will deliver $875,000 for 25 scholarships a year for Canberra teachers, with a particular focus on STEM and languages. We will support 25 teachers each year to obtain post-graduate qualifications so that they can deliver better education in the classroom.

Supporting STEM and language scholarships for teachers means that our students will be able to engage in the latest curriculum developments, benefitting them well beyond their school years. These scholarships, combined with other investments the government is making in high quality learning environments, will help cement Canberra’s place as a nation-leading centre of education.

The 2017-18 ACT Budget will see the Government delivering on the commitments we took to the 2016 election on the areas that matter most to Canberrans. In addition to delivering better schools for our kids, we will invest in better health care through our 10-year health plan and better services for our suburbs, while making the right investments to renew our city and maintain a strong local economy.
