2017 CBR Sport Awards winners announced

Released 01/12/2017

Tonight, the Canberra sporting community will come together to celebrate and reflect on what has been yet another wonderful year of sport in the ACT at the 2017 CBR Sport Awards.

The achievements of our top athletes have once again been outstanding with many shining not only on a local level, but nationally and even on the world stage.

The interest and momentum of this year’s event has continued to build on the success of last year, with an increase in nominations and more Canberrans taking the time to cast their vote for the People’s Sporting Champion.

Congratulations to born and bred Canberran Cyclist, Michael Matthews who was named Athlete of the Year – Men’s Sport for winning the coveted Tour de France green jersey, which many regard as the ultimate achievement for a road cycling sprinter.

I also congratulate BMX rider, Caroline Buchanan who was named Athlete of the Year – Women’s Sport after winning the 2017 Crankworks Ultimate Pump Track Challenge at Rotorua in New Zealand, and Paralympian javelin thrower, Jayden Sawyer who was named Athlete of the Year – Para Sport for smashing his PB with a record breaking throw at the World Para Athletics Championships in London this year.

It was fantastic to see Canberrans become involved again in voting for their 2017 favourite sporting star.

Congratulations to athletics champion, Cameron Crombie who secured the most votes and was named the People’s Sporting Champion.

ACT Schoolboys Rugby Union was named Konica Minolta Team of the Year and Carmel Weatherburn was presented with the WIN News Outstanding Service to Sport award.

I also want to congratulate the winners of the three Minister’s awards:

  • Minister for Sport and Recreation’s Award for Innovation: Canberra/Broulee Nippers Club
  • Minister for Sport and Recreation’s Award for Event Excellence: Capital Football
  • Minister for Sport and Recreation’s Award for Inclusion: Canberra Region Rugby League

Four more Canberrans were inducted into the ActewAGL ACT Sport Hall of Fame for their ongoing and long-standing commitment and contribution to sport in the ACT.

Congratulations to the two full members – Hockey’s Peta MacKinnon and Volleyball’s Ben Hardy, and two new associate members – Basketball’s Phil Brown and Rowing’s Paul Thompson.
