$2.7 million to boost local sport and recreation

Released 25/07/2017

Today I announced that more than $2.7 million will be invested in local sport and recreation as part of the 2017 Sport and Recreation Grants Program and Asset Repair and Maintenance Scheme.

It’s great to be able to congratulate the 70 organisations that the government will work with to provide the community with quality, diverse and safe physical activity experiences and places to play.

We are committed to supporting a healthy, active and inclusive community by making sure people feel inspired to improve their health and wellbeing through sport and recreation.

The recent release of the Australian Sports Commission’s AusPlay report confirmed Canberra’s long-held position as Australia’s most active community.

What this shows is that through our investment in sport and recreation organisations we are on track to achieve our long-term aims, as outlined in the ACTIVE 2020 strategy.

It is our quality local facilities, open spaces, community clubs and countless volunteers that have maintained this status and the government is proud to play its part and support our local sport and recreation community.

We recognise that an active population conveys significant health and economic benefits, while bringing people together to connect communities and develop new friendships.

Organisations receiving funding this year include:

  • Burley Griffin Canoe Club for construction of a new club shed ($116,400)
  • ACT Disc Golf to assist with setting up a new course at John Knight Park ($20,000)
  • Hockey ACT to run a new fully inclusive social hockey pilot program ($18,000)
  • Netball ACT to repair and maintain the Lyneham Netball Centre’s roof  and improve internal amenities($117,500)
