Second international student assessment confirms strengths and opportunities for ACT schools

Released 25/07/2017

The 2015 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) report has been released, measuring how well 15 year-olds from across the globe can apply their knowledge and skills in science, reading and mathematics to meet real-life challenges.

The ACT was the highest performing Australian jurisdiction in each PISA category – scientific literacy, reading literacy and mathematical literacy – with 14 per cent of our students classed as high performers in each domain.

Across all areas the ACT had 61-68 per cent of students at or above the PISA proficient standard for Australia which is higher than the national average.

PISA aims to test how students apply their knowledge in real life – drawing the connections between foundational subjects of English, maths and science, with broader life skills and personal development.

These are some of the indicators I really want to see our schools and students excelling in.

It’s why even though the ACT has again performed strongly in Australia, the ACT Government’s education commitments are aimed at taking our schools strongly ahead in the future, including:

  • a community-wide consultation and policy development process to map out the school education system we want for the future
  • an early childhood strategy to look at ways we can improve equity and access to education in the critical early learning years
  • 100 scholarships to train teachers in science, technology, engineering and maths.

These policy processes will include a close look at countries whose international performance is strong and who we can learn from.

With the PISA, TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) and upcoming NAPLAN data we can paint a good picture of our students’ performance in standardised testing.

Local evaluations we carry out with the National School Improvement Tool also give important indications of the quality of local schools and how our students are learning.

NAPLAN results are due to be released next week.
