Inaugural CBR Sport Awards winners announced

Released 09/12/2016

Tonight the Canberra sporting community has come together to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our top athletes, teams and behind-the-scenes contributors at the inaugural CBR Sport Awards.

It was great to host around 350 people from every level of sport in Canberra to celebrate diversity, participation, empowerment and achievement through an award tradition which the ACT Government has re‑established this year.

Congratulations to San Antonio Spurs guard Patty Mills who was named the Canberra Milk Athlete of the Year – Men’s Sport, Olympic gold medal rower Kim Brennan named the Capital Chemist Athlete of the Year – Women’s Sport and Paralympic cycling medalist Sue Powell named Athlete of the Year – Para Sport.

The Canberra Raiders were awarded Konica Minolta Team of the Year following a stellar 2016 season that saw them fall agonisingly short of a grand final berth.

It was fantastic to see Canberrans become involved in casting their votes for their 2016 favourite sporting star. Congratulations to Raiders Captain Jarrod Croker, who secured the most votes and was named WIN News People’s Sporting Champion.

Ginninderra Athletics Club President Steve Dodt was awarded Outstanding Service to Sport for his work and commitment to little athletics.

I also want to congratulate the winners of three new minister’s awards introduced tonight:

  • Minister for Sport and Recreation’s Award for Inclusion: Woden Valley Gymnastics
  • Minister for Sport and Recreation’s Award for Innovation: Ginninderra Athletics Club
  • Minister for Sport and Recreation’s Award for Event Excellence: Tennis ACT

All are doing fantastic work and have won a $3000 cash prize to further support their community activities.

The CBR Sport Awards builds on the tradition of the former Sports Star Awards and ActewAGL ACT Sport Hall of Fame.

Four new inductees were added to the ActewAGL ACT Sport Hall of Fame for their ongoing and long-standing contribution to sport in the ACT.

Congratulations to two full members – Rugby Union’s Stephen Larkham and Hockey’s Nicole Arrold, and two associate members – Hockey’s Ray Brown and Mountain Biking’s Russ Baker.
