Children embrace refugee friends on World Refugee Day

Released 25/07/2017

Children at Charnwood Dunlop School showed their support for refugees with a special afternoon tea today.

I joined the students and their teachers for the event to mark World Refugee Day and talked about the importance of supporting refugees.

We talked about what it is that makes a family flee their home to seek new life overseas, often facing dangerous journeys.

That is why in the ACT we have welcomed more than 2,000 refugees to our city since 1997 and have a long history of welcoming people from all around the world.

Over the past 70 years, around 800,000 Australians who were once refugees, have embraced our country and our way of life and continue to make a positive contributions to Australian society.

In Canberra, we have strong relationships between government, refugee support community organisations, the private sector and broader community provide a warm welcome to refugees.

On World Refugee Day, I urge all Canberrans, regardless of age, to demonstrate compassion, understanding and a genuine commitment to welcome all refugees into our community, which will serve to further enhance our cultural and religious diversity in our community.
