CBR Sport Awards to honour Canberra’s best

Released 25/07/2017

Today I had the honour of joining with some of Canberra’s sporting elite to launch the new CBR Sport Awards.

Sport is a central part of Canberra’s story.  It is important that sport has a platform to honour its champions and those contributors that will be the next chapter in this story.

These new Awards honour our high performing athletes, celebrate our sporting teams and provide some greater, collective recognition of just some of the people and organisations that make sport such a central part of our community.

The CBR Sport Awards build upon the previous Sport Star process delivered over many years by ACTSPORT and will continue to provide an avenue for recognition into the ACT Sport Hall of Fame.

When ACTSPORT elected to wind-down its operations last year the ACT Government strongly committed to the continuation of an annual awards process for the local sporting community.

Development of the new CBR Sport Awards has been informed through industry survey, direct stakeholder consultation and a detailed review of almost twenty other sporting awards process that currently exist around Australia.  This review looked at categories, criteria, assessment, timing and event delivery.

For these new CBR Sport Awards there is a reduced number of categories, simplified online nomination process and scope for the community to directly nominate online a “People’s Champion” – a gold Logie of Canberra sport if you will.

The CBR Sport Awards is for our local sporting community to own, to build and to, over time, establish its traditions.

The Awards shine a light on the achievements of our local sporting elite and the industry, presenting these in a manner that such a great sporting history demands.

The inaugural CBR Sport Awards will be held at the National Arboretum on 9 December.  Nominations open on 12 August, with all award and event details available at www.cbrsportawards.com.au.
