Canberra community takes a stand during 16 Days of Activism

Released 25/07/2017

Tomorrow (Saturday 10 December) marks the last of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence.

As the ACT’s first Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence, I supported the 16 Days of Activism campaign by joining with other areas in government, non-government organisations, and the Canberra community to spread the word about the global campaign.

The 16 Days of Activism campaign concludes on the International Day for Human Rights. To mark this year’s event, the United Nations has urged everyone to stand up for someone’s human rights and I echo this important call.

As a community, we all need to take a stand for the safety of women and girls and all of those who have been impacted by family and domestic violence.  To cement the importance of the campaign, our community has shown its solidarity in many ways. Some of you took an oath to stand against violence, while others chose to show support by wearing orange or by holding a community event in honour of the 16 days.

The ACT Government, in partnership with the National Capital Authority, has turned some of our landmarks orange as part of the 16 Days of Activism to make the campaign visible right across Canberra. The campaign has highlighted the work the ACT Government, community leaders and organisations have all undertaken to put an end to family and domestic violence.

The work to stop violence in our community will continue. This serious issue continues to affect so many people in our community and we all have an obligation to raise awareness and take action.

As the Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence, I will continue to raise this issue and bring it to the forefront of public conversation and ensure that the government advocates policy to make our community safer.
