ACT Women’s Awards winners announced

Released 08/03/2016

Amanda Whitley has been named this year’s ACT Woman of the Year at the awards ceremony this evening. Amanda supports local business, with a focus on businesses owned by women, by offering publicity and social media through articles on HerCanberra, of which she is the Founder and Director. HerCanberra provides a platform for discussion and awareness-raising on issues which affect women in the ACT.

This year the theme for International Women’s Day is Pledge for Parity. The theme is about celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and building momentum to achieve gender equity and it is fitting to see the award go to such a strong advocate for women’s participation in the life of our community.

This year we received many nominations for women who have been working to prevent the devastating impact of domestic violence against women.  A special category of award was created to acknowledge the outstanding contribution made by these women. This year Mirjana Wilson has taken out the ACT Violence Prevention Woman of the Year for her tireless work in the prevention of domestic and family violence in our community.

Rachael Stevens is this year’s Young Woman of the Year for improving the lives of young women and girls, particularly those impacted by eating disorders. And Krishna Sadhana is the ACT Senior Woman of the Year for her work in generously and skilfully supporting women through difficult periods and creating inclusive communities.

All awards were presented in honour of International Women’s Day where we recognise and celebrate the diversity of women’s economic, political and social achievements, and a day for calling for greater equality.

I would like to congratulate all nominees and in particular, this year’s winners. We can take inspiration from and express gratitude to the women who have been nominated for this year’s awards. These women are already working towards the creation of a city where all women and girls are treated with full equality.
