ACT Directorate recognised in preventing violence against women

Released 25/07/2017

The ACT Community Services Directorate has been recognised nationally for its commitment to preventing violence against women.

I congratulate the directorate for becoming the first ACT Government body to be accredited as a White Ribbon Workplace – and only the third in the territory.

Accreditation means that the directorate is now considered a pioneer in contributing to a national cultural change to prevent and respond to violence against women.

Independent assessors from the White Ribbon Workplace Accreditation Program examined the directorate’s policies and practices across three standards relating to leadership and commitment, prevention of violence against women, and response to violence against women.

Up to half a million women experience physical or sexual violence every year in Australia.  On average, one woman is killed a week.  Violence against women is estimated to cost $14.4 billion to the Australian economy each year and intimate partner violence is the leading contributor to death, disability and ill-health in women aged 15-44.

The ACT Government recently released its Response to Family Violence following the release of three major reports into family violence in the territory. It acknowledged that the ACT Government “remains absolutely committed to the prevention of family violence, including domestic violence and sexual assault,” and follows this year’s $21.42m Safer Families Budget package.
