Enjoy an Indigenous bush experience these school holidays

Released 10/10/2012

Children can gather around the campfire and listen to the stories of the Ngunnawal people at the Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary on Friday 12 October 2012.

"This is a great opportunity to hear about my people, and will get the kids out and about during the school holidays," said Adrian Brown, Ngunnawal Country Ranger with the ACT Parks and Conservation Service.

"While participants enjoy a cup of tea and Johnny cakes, a traditional food staple amongst my people, they will learn about the resources in the bush that were key to surviving in this landscape.

"The activity is free but bookings are essential, so make sure you don't miss out by calling 6207 0078 before 4 pm on Wednesday 10 October 2012 to secure a spot.

"Other activities on offer throughout the school holidays include a walk through Tidbinbilla's wetlands in search of the elusive platypus and the opportunity to join in the daily pelican feed.

"For just $5 per person, plus the Tidbinbilla entry fee, children can take part in the bush tucker tasting activity. This activity gives participants the opportunity to learn some of the culinary secrets of our Indigenous Australians, and those brave enough will have the chance to taste some traditional bush tucker, such as possum and wallaby, cooked over an open fire," Mr Brown said.

This Aussie bush experience will also take place on Friday 12 October 2012. Bookings are essential and can be made by calling 6205 1233.

"I encourage everyone to get out into the natural environment and discover the many fun activities held in our parks and reserves each month, as part of the ACT Parks and Conservation Service Explore Program."
