Motivating renters to improve energy-efficiency, solar trees and supporting Canberrans with mental illness to live more sustainably are among the seven projects that have received a share of $167,000 in the second round of the ACT Government’s Community Zero Emissions Grants program, Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability Shane Rattenbury announced today.
“I am delighted to see such a diverse range of community organisations being awarded funding for programs that will contribute to Canberra’s transition to net zero greenhouse gas emissions,” Mr Rattenbury said.
“The ACT Government has some of the most ambitious climate change targets in the world with a goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2045. We can’t do it alone, so grant projects like these are a great way to engage a diverse cross section of the community to take action and inspire others to do the same.”
The successful applicants for round two of the grants are:
Better Renting Limited will receive $24,875 to build the capacity and motivation of renters to make their homes more energy-efficient.
Brindabella Christian Education Limited will receive $25,000 to develop a pilot Solar Tree to be installed on the school campus, feeding into an existing Solar Grid and Educational Video Learning Display for students.
Mental Health Foundation ACT will receive $20,750 to engage and educate people living with mental illnesses and their carers on waste reduction and sustainable living.
Woden SEE-Change Incorporated will receive $24,000 to transform an existing shed at the Canberra City Farm into an ultra-low energy building (“Super Shed”).
Australian PV Institute Limited will receive $23,530 to provide the ACT community with an engaging, easy to use, free on-line tool (SunSPoT) to inform and accelerate investment in rooftop solar.
Canberra Environment Centre will receive $24,680 to develop a suite of targeted resources to encourage sustainable behaviours at an individual and household level for the Canberra Chinese community.
UnitingCare Kippax will receive $24,692 to create a re-locatable administration building for the Mower Shed entirely powered by solar panels and batteries through re-purposing two shipping containers.
“We are fortunate to live in a community which comes up with such innovative solutions to help tackle the shared problem of climate change,” Mr Rattenbury said.
“I look forward to seeing the successful projects rolled out in the coming year. I am sure they will each play their part in inspiring others to think more about their environmental impacts and what they can do to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through everyday behaviours.”
