Four community organisations will benefit from more than $1.2 million in new funding from the latest Healthy Canberra Grants funding opportunity.
Acting Minister for Health and Wellbeing Shane Rattenbury said the grants were a vital part of the ACT Government’s work to combat rates of overweight and obesity, reduce alcohol and tobacco related harm and promote healthy active ageing across the community
The successful applicants in the latest Healthy Canberra Grants are:
- Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education Limited (FARE) for a brief intervention program and a targeted awareness campaign aimed at reducing alcohol harm among women in the ACT.
- Bluearth Foundation for the Meet and Move program, a local activation program connecting parents/carers and children with opportunities to play in their local environment. The program will be delivered in partnership with the Canberra chapter of MEGA (Mums Exercise Group Australia) and Nutrition Australia ACT.
- Warehouse Circus Incorporated for the Circus for Health - Schools Spin Out Extension program. The program is a community based circus therapy and nutrition program addressing preventative health for young people in the ACT with complex and multiple disabilities.
- Nutrition Australia ACT for the Nourishing Little Minds program, which links food literacy and hands-on food experiences to support healthy eating habits of young children and their families.
“Healthy Canberra Grants are a key part of the ACT Government’s commitment to preventive health and I am pleased to announce the successful community organisations in the latest funding opportunity,” Minister Rattenbury said.
“The community organisations receiving this grant funding are not only aiming to increase physical activity opportunities and healthy eating for a range of ACT residents, but also address the prevalence and harm associated with other chronic conditions.
“For example, the 2016 ACT Chief Health Officer’s report highlighted that alcohol and tobacco related harms, particularly in certain sections of the ACT community, was an issue of importance.
“To help address this, through this new funding, FARE will be targeting the drinking culture amongst women 45 – 64 years through an online education platform and an awareness raising campaign.
“These health challenges affect all members of our community and we need to be creating change in many different settings to improve overall health outcomes across Canberra.”
